Thanks for posting (sorry for the delay in replying, I've been away doing some Adobe shows and events).

You're quite lucky at the moment that you're on CS3 in one way as the shortcut mentioned here no longer works in CS5! You're also quite right about not being able to find it in the KBSC window - it's one of the hidden ones (like create selection based on luminosity: it exists, but try and find it - just FYI, it's Cmd-alt-2). As for asigning, if you're on a decent Wacom tablet, you should be able to add a "special" shortcut to one of the buttons on your tablet, and that shortcut can be anything, including this one.

I have a question. I always thought having to switch from layer to layer mask by physically clicking on it was really annoying, but it's a little annoying to have these hot keys at polar opposites of the key board as well. Kind of like having to click on your mouse to switch. I also keep my kepboard a little further north from my desk because of my wacom tablet so the hot keys for this command is a little annoying. Granted I do use my function keys for action commands, but some how they aren't as cumbersome. I can't find these hot keys in the KBSC assigning window. Not under Application or Palette. Is there a way to assign them another hot key. I also think having two hot keys for something that would be easier to just be one that by clicking on it twice would switch back and forth. I also can't program it on the quick keys on my wacom either. It's being used for other tasks more often used. I'm still using CS3 because I have an older system that refuses to work well if updated. Hopefully I would be able to switch to CS5 or 6 by the time I can get a new mac.

Hi
The tips are really aimed at existing users, so you would at least need to have opened the program before.
If you want learn InDesign from scratch, you might consider something like a course at Lynda.com.

Saw your blog and decided to check it out. If only I had half a clue what InDesign does! Thought about learning a new product and this was suggested as a good place to learn InDesign. I guess InDesign helps you design? Something? And it looks like text is involved.

As this apparent first tip in your series has me lost, I'm guessing it wasn't one aimed at a n00b. ;)

Thanks, John you could then try this:

Select the layers you have already and convert them into a smart object

Turn the smart object's blend mode to multiply

Add a new blank layer beneath your smart object and try a bit of painting

There are numerous other places that this works - try the technique with text in the story editor inside of InDesign, with a path in Photoshop, or with an appearance attribute inside of Illustrator, for starters.
Some of the apps allow you to repeat the last operation, too. In Illustrator, for example, alt-drag a duplicate and then use the transform again shortcut <strong>cmd-d</strong> (that's ctrl-d on Windows) and see that you rduplicate is repeated. Do the same thing in Flash only this time the shortcut is <strong>cmd-y</strong> or in InDesign <strong>cmd-alt-3</strong>.

OK, I feel like I did skimp on the tip a bit, so here's a bit more:

If you're in a folder of images, you can view them as a carousel by going into Review Mode (cmd-B on the Mac, ctrl-B on a PC.

To view that folder as a slideshow, use Cmd-L (Ctrl-L on PC) and to exit both of those modes you can just hit the esc key.

[...] Bournemouth-based designer Edd Fahy has created a handy Lorem Ipsum text generator panel for Photoshop CS4 (I ought to make my web acceleratore one available – watch this space) – ideal for graphic designers who need some placeholder text for a layout! Haven’t got CS4? Don’t worry, you can use the Lorem Ipsum Generator (or InDesign users could always use some placeholder text and paste it in).
